In November 2000, Spaceworks was established by founder, Jane Eyles-Bennett. The era was marked by hand-drawn space plans and sending orders via a fax machine. Our initial business model was to design for the office sector. Come 2004, Jane welcomed Lizzi Whaley on board as a Junior Designer/PA. Having once led her own residential design venture, Lizzi was instantly captivated by commercial interiors. Under her influence, Spaceworks transitioned to computer-aided drawings with AutoCAD, along with putting the fax machine into retirement. By 2006, Jane was drawn to Australia, eager to take up her passion residential design. During this period, Spaceworks was a compact team of three, including Jane. Spotting an opportunity, Lizzi, a determined single mother, aspired to acquire Spaceworks. With a supportive banking consultant and countless nights of strategising, they came up with a mutually beneficial agreement. Thus, in November 2006, Lizzi Whaley proudly became the owner of Spaceworks.
From that pivotal juncture, Spaceworks has undergone immense transformation. It braved challenges like the Global Financial Crisis and Covid. The once three-person outfit now boasts a team of 20, operating in Office, Retail, Hospitality, and Aged Care sectors for over ten years. With a presence throughout Aotearoa, we value relationships above all. Our mission is to cultivate enduring connections. Lizzi prioritises people — both her team and our clients. Her profound grasp of human-centric design profoundly shapes the ethos and culture at Spaceworks. We believe in delivering our utmost so our clients can, in turn, realise their best potential through design.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have developed a carbon calculator for the fitout sector, enabling accuracy in the calculation of carbon emissions.
