Te Taumata o Kupe
Te Taumata o Kupe: A Living Space for Storytelling and Community
Te Taumata o Kupe is a cultural and educational hub at Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier, Auckland.
Designed by TOA Architects, it celebrates the spirit of Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator, with a sweeping form and patterned glass façade reflecting voyaging, the ocean, and the stars.
Spaceworks was honoured to contribute to this award-winning project by leading the selection and installation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E). Our objective was to provide furnishings that offer flexibility and adaptability, essential for the many functions of Te Taumata o Kupe. The furniture solutions were designed to be easily reconfigurable, supporting various activities and events. Aligned with TOA Architects’ storytelling-led design, the FF&E solution allows the space to adapt, from wānanga to community gatherings, while honouring the cultural narrative at its core.
Te Taumata o Kupe has received several accolades, including the 2024 John Scott Award for Public Architecture from the New Zealand Institute of Architects.
Spaceworks is proud to have played a role in bringing Te Taumata o Kupe to life, providing flexible and functional interior solutions that support the marae’s mission to share and preserve mātauranga Māori (traditional knowledge).
