Zero Waste – At What Cost
Zero Construction Waste in NZ: Feasible or Fiction?
By Lizzi Whaley
Can zero construction waste NZ become a reality, or is it an impossible goal? I’ve been brewing a theory—and I’m eager to validate or debunk it. In full-scale retail and office refurbishments, can we truly eliminate waste without compromising budgets, timelines, or project outcomes?
Of course, there are exceptions—projects that repurpose significant materials stand a better chance. But for most large-scale renovations, it’s a different story. As a team deeply invested in sustainability, we’ve explored carbon reduction and waste minimisation extensively.
The Role of Decision-Making in Waste Management
The fact that 80% of waste decisions are made in the boardroom underscores the influence of designers and architects. The materials we specify and the partnerships we choose have a direct impact on waste reduction.
We’ve all seen those hockey stick graphs—the first stretch of a goal is manageable, but the last few percentage points become exponentially harder. The same applies to waste reduction.
Waste Diversion vs. Cost & Carbon Impact
Our Findings:
– Achieving 70% waste diversion and 45% carbon reduction has minimal impact on project budget or timeline.
– Green Gorilla consistently diverts 70% of waste—but what about the remaining 30%?
– The final stretch of waste elimination often leads to higher costs, longer hours, and increased carbon emissions.
This challenge is particularly relevant in Retail, where materials like MDF board are difficult to recycle.
A Call for Transparency & Collaboration
I’m a staunch advocate for zero waste, but I also believe in honest conversations. If your project has achieved true zero waste, share your experience—warts and all.
What worked? What didn’t? What were the real costs in budget, resources, and emissions?
